Tour Highlights
Basilica of Santa Maria de Montserrat
With its origins in the 11th century, the Benedictine Abbey of Santa Maria de Montserrat definitely takes a prominent space in the mountain. More than 70 monks still live there using the basilica for mass. This newer church is open to the public and we will visit it during the tour.
Black Madonna shrine
The basilica is home to the oldest image of the Black Madonna of Montserrat, patron saint of Catalonia. It is a beautiful 12th-century Romanesque statue situated above the altar and in the early morning, you can access the shrine to take a closer look. To kiss the virgin’s hand and orb is definitely a spiritual experience.
Boys' choir ("escolania")
[Not available on Weekends and school’s holidays]
The Escolania de Montserrat is one of the oldest Boys’ Choirs in Europe. Formed by more than 50 children aged 9 to 14, this is a world-renowned group that even performs internationally so to see them on their home territory is a special treat.

Art Museum
A big surprise to any visit to Montserrat is the fantastic Art collection that its museum holds. Among the 1,300 pieces you can find works by Caravaggio, El Greco, Monet, Dalí or Picasso. This is a must if you are an Art lover.
Holy grotto
The Holy Grotto (or “Santa Cova”) is a very important place of pilgrimage as this is where, according to tradition, in 880 the image of the Black Madonna was found. The 1.5 km walk to the cave and chapel is a delight with a monumental rosary including works by Catalan Art Nouveau names like Antoni Gaudí, Josep Puig i Cadafalch or Josep Llimona.

Nature walks
For many, the highlight of a visit to Montserrat is not in the religious aspect but in the magnificent surroundings. There are many walks around the area to enjoy the fabulous rock formations. Five of the routes leave from the monastery so, depending on your level of fitness, you might want to take a stroll and admire the views.

FAQs
Is the price of the Montserrat private tour per group or per person?
All our private tours are priced per group, not per person. The only price difference will be in the number of tickets to the sites.
Will there be other people joining the tour?
No. This is a private tour, only for your group. You can ask your guide as many questions as you'd like, and go at the pace that suits you best.
Will the guide accompany us during the tour?
Yes, your guide will be with you during the whole duration of the tour, and will acconmpany you inside the Basilica, walks, or other sites.
Do we skip the lines at the sites in Montserrat?
The tickets for the Basilica, Black Madonna's Chamber and Boys' Choir will be all booked for a specific time, so there is very little waiting involved, if any.
What should I wear? Is there a dress code at the Basilica of Montserrat?
Wear comfortable walking shoes and dress according to the weather, especially if you are planing to do some longer walks around the mountain.
In the summer, sun hats and sun cream are essential, as it can get very hot. In the winter, wear layers and bring rain gear, just in case.
Since Montserrat is a religious site, modest clothing (covered shoulders and knees) is recommended when entering the Basilica.
Is the tour suitable for children?
We love children at Runner Bean Tours, so kids are more than welcome on all our tours. We take great care to always pair families with kids with a family-friendly guide.
Can you accommodate large groups?
Of course. All our private tours are catered for individuals, couples, families, groups of friends, corporate groups or very large groups. Just let us know what you need and we will make your visit to Montserrat memorable.
Do we stop for lunch?
On the basic 5-hour tour, we don't stop for lunch. If you'd like to eat during the tour, we can have lunch once we leave the monastery, at a local restaurant in the small town at the foot of the mountain.
To acommodate for this, you can extend the tour for 1 or 2 hours, depending on how much you would like to do and see in Montserrat.
What happens if it rains?
Don't worry, our tours run in all kinds of weather. In the case of heavy rain the tour will run as usual so please bring suitable rain gear.
How far in advance should I book?
We are a small local company with a handful of guides. In busy periods, we do sell out, so it is recommended to book as early as you can.
Will we be seeing the Black Madonna and listening to the Boys' Choir?
Ususally, we do visit the Black Madonna's Chamber on the Montserrat private tour, unless you prefer not to.
The Boys' Choir doesn't perform on weekends or during school holidays. They do sing as part of the mass on Sundays, but this is only reserved for people attending mass.
It is entirely up to you if you would like to add the Boys' Choir to the tour. They only sing at 1pm Monday to Friday, so the starting time has to be arranged according to this.
Do you recommend taking the tour in the morning or in the afternoon?
This is entirely up to you and your time preferences, but here are a few pointers to help you decide.
Montserrat is busier in the mornings and quieter in the afternoons.
If you are a morning person, we recommend starting no later than 8:30am (on weekends) or 9:30am (on weekdays), to avoid traffic.
Please notre that the Boys' Choir only sings at 1pm, Monday to Friday, so it won't be available for afternoon tours.
How much walking is involved?
The tour involves moderate walking on paved paths. Optional hikes can be added. Let us know in advance if you have mobility concerns.
Can I take the cable car (aeri) or the cog-trains (funiculars) in the mountain?
These are all optional, so you can decide with your guide on the drive to Montserrat what you would like to include. You can pay for them (plus your guide's fare) on site.
How far is Montserrat from Barcelona?
Montserrat is approximately 50 km (30 miles) from Barcelona, and it takes about 1 hour by car.
Can we combine Montserrat with other destinations?
Of course. Many travelers combine Montserrat with places such as a winery in Penedès or the Roman City of Tarragona. Just request it, and we will make it happen.
